Corrosion Impacts on Steel Pipes

Before you use just any type of foundation for your next solar project, please read the article below. When a solar project has the life expectancy of 20 to 30 years plus, the durability of the foundation needs to be a considered factor.  While helical piles were not mentioned in the article, it is explained that the thickness of the pipe and the shape factors into the corrosion.  In summary, the article states that round piles, similar to Cantsink’s shape of the helical piles, corrode slower due to the oxygen in the soil. “Pile shape affects corrosion. Compared to the H-piles, round piles generally corrode slow. The interior of the pile does not come into contact with the exterior soil, which has significant oxygen content.  The oxygen contained in the soil on the interior pipe is consumed fairly quickly and corrosion is then slowed.”
